We, the contributors to this new website, are using our First Amendment right to expose and critique hate speech. We are focusing here on corporate pimp and pornographer Larry Flynt because so many politicos and pundits from the Left have failed to comment on, much less confront Flynt’s hate speech. While Flynt’s censored speech has been celebrated in mainstream film, the multibillion dollar sexxxism industry is mimicked in commercial advertising and pornography’s themes and aesthetics are commonplace on TV shows. The sexual exploitation, violence, and degradation –that previously were only found in pornography and other real-life sexual exploitation, violence, and degradation, is no longer only a staple in the centerfolds of a few adult magazines, but is, rather, a staple of corporate-owned media.
The omnipresence of this particular form of speech is responded to in two ways by the increasingly impotent press: wide-ranging apologetics or an utter lack of critical attention. We contend that the sexxxism industry’s systematic human rights abuses are atrocious and the Left must speak to the atrocious harm of the overlapping sexxxism industries: pornography, prostitution, trafficking, sex tourism, and sexual slavery.
Flynt has engaged for some time in a battle for social prominence and power. What is largely unnoticed, or, if noticed, unchallenged by anyone, is his war against those who speak out against him. We think the contents of this site will reveal what he wishes to keep under wraps: Larry Flynt is a hostile, misogynist, racist, power-hungry corporate pimp rather than a poor, besieged, free speech hero.
His pornographic speech rides on the life-breath of subordinated people. We understand that even more people are dehumanized by the consumption of Flynt’s speech. We are increasingly transformed into compulsive consumers of the sexxxism industry’s hate speech. This hate speech fosters addiction and despair and is fueled by harm and humiliation. Younger generations of women now think pornography is eroticism, that stripping on a pole is sexual liberation, and that being sexually used–with or without consen–is acceptable or unavoidable. Tragically, a sexxx-obsessed public has been mind-fucked by the messages in pornography.
In an effort to keep his status erect, Flynt has wooed some people in the anti-corporate Left while simultaneously targeting feminists and feminism, using the First Amendment as his club. This site is our response to his efforts to intimidate and harass us. This site also reflects our demand that the Silent Left be held accountable for its collaboration and complicity with Flynt. We encourage those on the Left to clarify their positions on these corporate violations of human and animal rights.
At this site you will see who on the Left has been used by Larry Flynt’s multimillion dollar pornography empire; some unwittingly or unwillingly, like Noam Chomsky, others willingly, and some enthusiastically, like Greg Palast. You will read their own explanations-about how some were misled, lied to, and demeaned by Hustler and their representatives.

The point is not to draw attention to Flynt… God knows no one can do that better than he does himself. It is to draw attention to the continued refusal of many on the putative Left to pay the same attention to gender as an oppressive social system as they do to, say, white supremacy. None of these folks who are appearing in (and therefore validating) Hustler, some of whom I know personally and have collaborated with in the past, would ever think of having their stuff appear in Southern Partisan, yet they allow themselves to be bamboozled by this Horatio Algier of the lumpen-pimps that he is an icon for free speech.
In the process, these so-called progressives have appeared alongside not only dehumanizing misogynist representations of women, but in a magazine that also routinely spews racism.
Any so-called progressive who allows him- or herself to appear in any way in Hustler magazine is backward. Very very backward. We are responsible to call this out in the most unequivocal way possible, or we cannot claim even a shred of solidarity with women, oppressed nationalities, or anyone else, IMO.
So the people this site intends to draw attention to are not Flynt and his cronies. At least NION issued an apology when they were sucked in by these pimp-charlatans. Whether others are capable of self-criticism on this issue will tell us a lot about these so-called leaders.
We on the left have to deal with plenty of people who are not with us on the left. That’s life. But we don’t work with Klan. Flynt is the gender-equivalent of Klan. We gotta name it.

It’s about time. When he declared “war” on feminists for having dared critique him, I knew someone would respond, but I was still afraid that leftists would ignore the issue. After all, he only wants the heads of “feminists,” not anybody else. That begs the question: If one of us is attacked (by a rich bastard), will we stick together?
Why would “progressives” and “radicals” give this man the time of day? He is a supercapitalist, and an openly racist one at that! These reasons alone should have repelled so-called leftists. Then again, most people see Flynt the pornographer, then they see the “free-speech hero,” and then that’s the end of that. Also, too many people on the left have their own problems with sexism and racism (witness Greg Palast) that make it hard for them to identify with the oppressed, even fellow activists. That weakness is anathema for the movement, illustrated by the public (corporate) harassment of Aura Bogado. No activist can claim that Hustler is harmless after what happened to her.
One more thing: “Chester the Molester” was more nauseating than I ever imagined.

This is not a war on feminists. That’s just Hustler’s latest ploy for attention. For decades Hustler has declared war on women, feminists, people of color, Jews, the disabled, children, any group or individual who disagreed with them, animals and animal rights activists.
We just put up our Gallery of Hustler Images which will be categorized by “Racist,” “Pedophilic,” “Misogynistic,” “Anti-Semitic,” “Ridicule of Disabled People” and “Violent Hate Speech.” But without that categorization you can easily get the idea. It’s not just feminists that Hustler has gone to war against. They aim hate speech and harassment towards every oppressed groups you can name.

I’ve got a few questions. Other than Noam Chomsky, did y’all get to talk to the other writers who’ve contributed to Hustler? The oppressive editorial history outlined at Hustling the Left had to be known by at least some of them–it ain’t exactly a secret. Wouldn’t you at least scan a publication that you’re gonna contribute to? Call me naive, but I just don’t get it.
Also, I’ve got to understand more about Chomsky. I don’t believe that he is as ignorant of mass media and culture as he says, but I could be wrong. Even if the editors lied about themselves, didn’t he at least know who Hustler was when he discovered the truth? Now I know nothing about his life, but I have read his writings, and I always thought he was a media critic! But then he tells you that he “never pays attention” to the mass culture. How can you write and speak about mass media without paying attention to its culture? Plus, Hustler’s been around for over thirty years as a mainstream publication; I’ve known about Hustler since I was five years old. If you go the gas station or the corner store, you will see Hustler.
I’m quite naive about the sex industry, but I’m learning as much as I can every day. You and Stan’s and others’ work on this issue has been a godsend. Thanks so much.

Re: “naive” Chomsky being misled, and the improbability of him not knowing about Hustler, those on the left might want to give the man the benefit of the doubt, given his consistent and invaluable efforts in acting as a foil to the corporate pimps that run the mainstream media. Further, his actions in remedying the situation after he discovered the nature of the magazine are consistent with his ethics.
By the way, ever heard of Maxim? I never had until a couple years ago and they’ve been around for years.

Chomsky is a critic of media coverage of international affairs to a large extent, that’s his focus. He spends little time refering to pop culture matters. He has e-mail but apparently he dosen’t use the internet, isn’t connected at home, because it freaks him out with the complexity or whatever
