Many of us who are doing this form of political writing — the kind that is not “saleable” — are either doing the writing in our diminishing spare time, as university faculty, or as part of a feral scholar’s hand-to-mouth existence. I am one of the latter. I don’t have a regular job, and I don’t want a regular job. That doesn’t mean I don’t work. I work my ass off almost every day, but the Market doesn’t reward this kind of work. I get an occasional speaking gig for money, a consulting gig here and there, and a couple of labor-intensive writing gigs that are on pretty shaky foundations. My book sales are very modest and provide me around $2,500 a year so far.

But I write a lot, and some people have found that writing valuable. My appeal here is that if you are using that writing, or want to use it, and can afford a contribution, it will be happily accepted in lieu of the publishing world’s system of royalties. If, for example, you find a piece like “The War for Saudi Arabia,” helpful, and you want to use it for a class, or as a pamphlet, feel free to copy or download it (please don’t change it), reproduce it, and even peddle it at tables. Just don’t forget me. Send along what you think is fair, or send along something to offset for those who need and can’t pay.

Your assistance will not merley support a writer, but an activist and all those I work with. Corporate foundations are not going to fund revolutionaries. That goes for other writers and activists, too. If you appreciate what they do, and you want them to do more, support them. It is very difficult to engage in the thought process that leads to a piece like “Capitalism is Against the Law” if you’ve just come home from a 9-5 job with your circuits fried.

A simple check to “Stan Goff” will do. I am not a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and you cannot claim me as a tax exemption. If I were, then there would be things I could not say or do.
