GM

Gene insertion is a major problem. You cannot direct where the splicing of the genetic construct will happen. It is well known that when you insert a genetic construct into the DNA network of a plant, you create changes in that network. As a result, you will get changes in the functionality of the plant’s own genes. They may become more active or silent. The effects will be unpredictable and uncontrollable. It can sometimes cause irreparable damage to the genome. This is insertional mutagenesis…

Why are such limited funds available for research looking at health effects of GM foods?

It is not in the interest of the biotech companies, or most of the governments, to dig up data that could question the safety of GM products. For the industry GM is just another product and, if it is not acutely poisonous, their job is to sell as much as possible of it.

Do you believe that scientific research will conclusively show that GM foods pose significant health risks?

    Yes.

According to some agricultural scientist, the rush to promote genetic modification is undermining less exotic but more effective research and proven solutions to food problems and crop disease. The idea that GM crops are probably unnecessary pales in comparison to the potential, that once genetically altered foods are planted, the consequences are irreversible.
On November 3, 2000 in London, England, a group of doctors and scientist opposed to GM and calling themselves The Natural Law Party said in an address to the government of England, “Today the Natural Law Party used this public hearing, on the proposed addition of Chardon LL Maize (a GM variety of corn developed by Aventis) to the National Seed List, to serve notice on the Government that it will not be able to plead ignorance in defense of future claims of personal injury or environmental damage arising from introduction of this new technology”.
As a member of the American working class I cannot get a feel for the mind of the ruling class. What motivates them.

  2. nelgsiwel:

The powers that promote GM and ignore the scientific haralds of warning and consequences must have more money than they can spend in a hundred lifetimes. They and their loved ones are as vulnerable as any of us to violations to our earth.

Sex. Death. Love (or its evil stand-in, objectification). Power. Same stuff that motivates a lot of us, sans necessity… and there’s the rub.

When Stanley Hauerwas was asked if working class people are more honest than the bourgeoisie, he said, “Of course they are. They have less to lose.”

When Mab Segrest described the intrapsychic state of those with power, she called it anesthetic. “The anesthesia of power.”

I’m not sure where to put this, but have you seen this kind of thing?:

    http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200907/climate-engineering

    I think we’re all mad.

  6. Stan:

It’s 4:40 am, and Sherry and I are leaving the grid in about half an hour, for ten days. De is already off-grid. If I get a chance somewhere somehow, I’ll moderate. If not, we beg your patience. Post away, and we’ll filter through when we get back. I’ll be somewhere near water in Jackson County, Michigan, with a (computer-less) house full of relatives.

    Warmest regards to all,

    Stan

Banksters Love Cap-and-Trade: Economic collapse about to accelerate
The well-placed and well-connected are set to make trillions off new climate bill

    By James Corbett

    Global Research, July 2, 2009
    The Corbett Report

The sweeping new bill which just passed the House last Friday, the Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, is ostensibly about climate change, but it is in fact a bill of staggering economic ramifications that is going to accelerate the takeover of the economy by the well-placed financiers who have already plundered the Treasury and the Fed of $12+ trillion and counting.

Robert Hormats, Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs, is to be installed as Under Secretary of Economics, Business, and Agricultural Affairs. This comes as one more, probably unnecessary reminder of the total control exercised by Wall Street over the Obama administration’s economic and financial policy.

An interesting article—unintended consequences, and a great excuse to keep the “War on Drugs” (always a “war” on something) going:

New super strain of coca plant stuns anti-drug officials

    Published Date: 27 August 2004

    By JEREMY MCDERMOTT IN BOGOTÁ

DRUG traffickers have created a new strain of coca plant that yields up to four times more cocaine than existing plants and promises to revolutionise Colombia’s drugs industry.
The new variety of coca, the raw material for cocaine, was found in an anti-drug operation on the Caribbean coast, on the mountainsides of the Sierra Nevada, long known as a drug-growing region.
