The Pentagon energy sink

As oil continues to gush into the Gulf of Mexico, just one of many manifestations of perilous ecological degradation across the planet, the need to challenge war and militarism—especially in terms of the United States—becomes ever-more pressing. The U.S. military is the world’s single biggest consumer of fossil fuels, and the single entity most responsible for destabilizing the Earth’s climate.

Reminds me of when the Army would deploy bigger parachutes “so you’d land softer in higher altitudes.” You knew you better make room in your ruck for more batteries =-(

I was watching this program on cruise ships an hour or so ago. (The warden gave extra TV prevleges this week.) Did you know that a 2000 passenger cruise ship uses as much energy, or maybe it was electricity, as a city of 200,000 people. I can imagine that they were talking about a city like say Corpus Christi or Topeka not Belize. So as Alan and Tom were pointing out your average western city wastes oodles of elctricity and or energy. Then you have cruise ships which waste 100 times more than that. Wow!
YET the funny thing is I think someone who would call for the elimination of the cruise industry would be kind of like the grinch who stole Christmas. It should be a possilbe option for honeymooners, or people celebrating their 25th or 50th wedding aniversary, or people who have just gotten out of prison after serving 20 years for relatively honorable crimes.
Can the cruise industry be made honorable?

On another somewhat related note, the increasing number of “cruise ships” that sail pass US all you can eat lunch and dinner buffets each day. I want to say that Americans are not fat becasue they eat to much.
They are fat becasue the do to little work. What I find particularily ironic is that many of the Americans who are not fat are not fat becasue they do things that are totally non productive like jog or ride bike or swim or lift weights. The only ultimate purpose of these activities is to prevent the participant from becoming overweight so that they can eat even more food.
Of course the one system in the US that has fewer overweight people in it than the prison system is the military which busies it self running around chasing imaginary threats to American’s right to be ober weight.

@ Buddha as St. Jude: “non-productive” exercise has been proven to reduce participation in the pharma/health care system. Generally speaking people who are very concientious of their diet/excercise and weight do not work out so that they can eat more food.
